Martinez is a city in Contra Costa County, California, and serves as the county seat. Located in the East Bay region of the San Francisco Bay Area, the city sits along the southern shore of the Carquinez Strait. According to the 2020 census, Martinez has a population of about 37,287 residents. The city was named after Californio ranchero Ygnacio Martínez and developed on land that was once part of his Rancho El Pinole grant. Today, Martinez is known for its historic downtown district and scenic waterfront.

Long before European settlement, the area that is now Martinez was inhabited by the Karkines people, part of the Ohlone (Costanoan) Native American group. The fertile Alhambra Valley likely served as a seasonal gathering area for food and resources.

In 1824, the land that now includes Martinez became part of the Rancho El Pinole Mexican land grant given to Ygnacio Martínez. Nearby land was later granted to William Welch as Rancho Las Juntas in 1844. The town’s early development was closely tied to transportation and trade along the Carquinez Strait.

In 1847, Dr. Robert Semple began operating a ferry between Martinez and Benicia, which became the main crossing over the strait for many years. During the California Gold Rush of 1849, Martinez served as an important stopping point for travelers heading to the gold fields. The town was officially laid out that same year by Colonel William M. Smith and named after the Martínez family. Martinez became the county seat in 1850 and later incorporated as a city in 1876.

Martinez also played a role in the Pony Express in 1860. Riders sometimes crossed the strait by ferry from Benicia to Martinez if they missed steamships traveling through Sacramento.

The city is also historically significant as the longtime home of renowned naturalist John Muir. Muir lived in Martinez from 1880 until his death in 1914. His home is now preserved as the John Muir National Historic Site. Another historic structure in the city is the Vicente Martínez Adobe, built in 1849 by the son of Ygnacio Martínez and considered the oldest building in Martinez.

Industrial development in Martinez began in the early 20th century with the construction of oil refineries along the waterfront. The first refinery was built in 1904 near Bull’s Head Point. Additional refineries followed, including facilities built by Pacific Coast Oil Company, Golden Eagle, and Shell Oil. Oil refining remains an important part of the local economy, and the Shell refinery continues operating today under new ownership. Although one refinery closed in 2020 due to declining demand during the COVID-19 pandemic, Martinez remains a significant petroleum processing center in the region.

Local folklore also claims that the famous Martini cocktail was first created in Martinez, though the exact origins remain debated.

Martinez covers approximately 13.6 square miles, including about one square mile of water. The city lies at the eastern end of the Carquinez Strait where it opens into Suisun Bay. The Benicia–Martinez Bridge carries Interstate 680 across the strait, connecting Martinez with Solano County to the north.

The city’s downtown sits in a valley shaped by Alhambra Creek, while residential neighborhoods extend south toward Pleasant Hill. Martinez is surrounded by several regional parks and open-space areas, including Martinez Regional Shoreline, Briones Regional Park, and the Carquinez Strait Regional Shoreline.

Martinez is also notable for being one of only two locations in the Bay Area where both the Bay Area Ridge Trail and the San Francisco Bay Trail intersect. These extensive trail systems provide hundreds of miles of hiking, biking, and outdoor recreation throughout the region.
Martinez has a Mediterranean climate characterized by warm, dry summers cool, wet winters. Summer temperatures often reach the upper 80s°F during the day but cool significantly at night due to breezes from the bay. Winters bring most of the area’s rainfall and occasional frost.

As of the 2020 census, Martinez had a population of just over 37,000 people. The city includes a mix of owner-occupied and rental housing, with the majority of residents living in owner-occupied homes. The median household income in 2023 was approximately $125,436.
Major employers in Martinez include Contra Costa County, the Veterans Health Administration, Kaiser Permanente, the Martinez Unified School District, and several large retail and energy companies.

The Martinez Library, an Art Deco building constructed in 1941 and listed on the National Register of Historic Places, serves as a cultural landmark for the community. Local news coverage is provided by outlets such as the Martinez News-Gazette, East Bay Times, and several online community news platforms.
