Moraga is a town in Contra Costa County, California, located in the San Francisco Bay Area. Named after Joaquín Moraga of the historic Californio Moraga family, the town had a population of 16,870 as of the 2020 census. Moraga is also home to Saint Mary’s College of California, a well-known private college that relocated to the town in 1928.
History
Long before European settlement, the land that is now Moraga was inhabited by the Saklan people, part of the Bay Miwok language group. The town’s name honors Joaquín Moraga, whose family played an important role in early California history. His grandfather, José Joaquín Moraga, helped build the Presidio of San Francisco and founded the pueblo that later became the city of San Jose. Joaquín’s father, Gabriel Moraga, was an explorer who named several major California rivers, including the Sacramento and San Joaquin. Moraga sits on land that was originally part of the 1835 Mexican land grant known as Rancho Laguna de los Palos Colorados, which was given to Joaquín Moraga and his cousin Juan Bernal. Portions of this historic grant included land that is now Moraga Ranch. The historic Moraga Adobe, associated with the family, has been preserved and is located in nearby Orinda.
In the early 20th century, the Sacramento Northern Railroad ran through Moraga. Much of the old railroad right-of-way has since been converted into the Lafayette-Moraga Regional Trail, a popular path for walking, cycling, and recreation.
Moraga’s first post office opened in 1886 but closed the following year before reopening in 1915. A new post office was built in 1955. The town officially incorporated in 1974 when the communities of Moraga Town, Rheem, and Rheem Valley joined together to form one municipality.
In 2017, Moraga declared a fiscal emergency after a large sinkhole and a damaged bridge on Canyon Road required costly repairs estimated at around $5 million.
Geography
Moraga covers about 9.5 square miles and is located in a valley surrounded by rolling hills. Nearly all of the area is land, with only a very small portion consisting of water.
The town sits near several other East Bay communities, including Lafayette, Orinda, Walnut Creek, Oakland, Berkeley, Concord, and San Francisco. Its scenic location and quiet suburban environment make it a desirable residential area within commuting distance of major Bay Area cities.
The Lafayette-Moraga Regional Trail runs through large portions of the town, providing residents with convenient access to outdoor recreation and scenic routes for walking and biking.

Like many parts of California, Moraga has faced periods of drought and elevated wildfire risk during particularly dry years.

According to the 2020 United States Census, Moraga had a population of 16,870, with a population density of about 1,783 people per square mile.
The town’s population is diverse, with the racial makeup consisting of approximately 64.5% White, 18.9% Asian, 1.3% African American, and smaller percentages of other racial groups or mixed heritage. Hispanic or Latino residents make up about 9.8% of the population.
There were 5,698 households in Moraga, with an average household size of about 2.7 people. Many households are family households, and over one-third include children under the age of 18. The median age in the community is 42.9 years.
Housing in Moraga is predominantly owner-occupied, with about 81% of homes owned by residents and roughly 19% rented.
The town is considered relatively affluent. In 2023, the estimated median household income was about $199,800, and the per-capita income was approximately $89,439. A small percentage of families and residents live below the poverty line.
