Lafayette is a city located in Contra Costa County, California, within the San Francisco Bay Area. As of the 2020 U.S. Census, the city had a population of 25,391 residents. The city was named after the Marquis de Lafayette, a French military officer who played a key role in supporting the American colonies during the American Revolutionary War. Over time, Lafayette has developed from a small agricultural settlement into a suburban community known for its scenic landscape, residential character, and access to regional transportation.
The pronunciation of Lafayette varies among residents. Common variations include “LAH-fee-eht,” “LAH-fai-eht,” and “LAH-fay-eht.” Despite these differences, all pronunciations refer to the same city and reflect the linguistic diversity of the community.
Long before European settlement, the area now known as Lafayette was inhabited by Indigenous peoples, primarily the Saclan tribe of the Bay Miwok, with some Ohlone communities living along Lafayette Creek. European contact began in the late eighteenth century with the establishment of Spanish Catholic missions throughout California. These encounters led to significant conflict between Indigenous populations and Spanish colonizers. One such confrontation occurred in 1797 on land that is now part of Lafayette. Ultimately, these conflicts contributed to the displacement and subjugation of the native population.
During the Mexican period of California’s history, much of the land that is now Lafayette became part of a large land grant known as Rancho Acalanes. In 1834, the Mexican government granted this property to Candelario Valencia. The name Acalanes likely derived from Ahala-n, the name of a native village that once existed in the region.
American settlement began in 1846 when Elam Brown arrived from St. Joseph, Missouri. Brown purchased Rancho Acalanes in 1848 and established a small but growing community. The settlement expanded gradually due to its proximity to San Francisco and other developing towns in the region. Brown also established a mill in 1853, which contributed to the local economy and encouraged additional settlers to move to the area.
One of Brown’s fellow settlers, Milo J. Hough, constructed a hotel near what is now Plaza Park in 1853. The following year, he became the first postmaster of a short-lived post office called Acelanus. Although that post office closed quickly, it helped establish the area as an emerging settlement. Education became part of the community early on. A one-room schoolhouse opened in 1852 with a young teacher named Benjamin Shreve. As the population grew, the school expanded. By 1868, local residents approved a tax levy to fund a larger school building, allowing the school year to extend from five months to nine months. In 1893, another schoolhouse was constructed to accommodate the increasing number of students, and that building still stands today.
The town officially gained its name in 1857 when the United States Postal Service established a new post office. Benjamin Shreve applied for the post office and initially suggested the name “Centerville,” but that name was already in use elsewhere in California. He then proposed “La Fayette,” honoring the Revolutionary War hero. The original spelling and formatting of the town’s name changed several times over the decades before officially becoming “Lafayette” in 1932.
In the early 1860s, Lafayette briefly served as a station for the Pony Express, adding another small but notable chapter to its early history.
Geographically, Lafayette sits at the base of the Berkeley Hills and covers approximately 15.4 square miles. The city lies between Walnut Creek, Moraga, and Orinda, and together these communities are commonly referred to as “Lamorinda.” Lafayette is connected to the broader Bay Area through the Bay Area Rapid Transit (BART) system, providing residents with convenient access to nearby cities.
The city’s climate is Mediterranean, characterized by warm, dry summers and cool, damp winters. Temperatures in Lafayette can become significantly warmer than coastal areas west of the Berkeley Hills, with summer highs sometimes exceeding 100 degrees Fahrenheit. Most rainfall occurs during the winter months.
Lafayette is also known for its natural surroundings, including rolling hills, oak woodlands, and recreational areas such as the Lafayette Reservoir and nearby Briones Regional Park. These landscapes contribute to the city’s quiet, suburban atmosphere.
Today, Lafayette remains a residential community with strong educational attainment and a high median household income. Its combination of historical roots, scenic geography, and proximity to major Bay Area cities continues to make it an attractive place to live.
